Charles Kiene is a mixed-methods researcher focusing on the strategic management of online groups and self-governance of online communities. He has spent most of his research career investigating the practices and behaviors of volunteer-based content moderation teams on discussion-based online platforms like Reddit and Discord. He has contributed nearly 10 years of research to the fields of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and human-computer interaction (CHI). Charles obtained his PhD from the University of Washington in the Department of Communication and is an Affiliate Researcher of the Community Data Science Collective.
