The key to reporting on any persistent difficult issue is reframing how we talk about it in order to truly engage and empower our audiences. Psychic numbing is real. Compassion exhaustion is real. Information overload is real. Blasting our audiences with dire statistics and traumatic stories actually robs them of a feeling of agency or self-efficacy. So what is the answer? Storytelling that empowers people. We need to be showing our audience that they as individuals–and as members of their communities, cities and countries–have power, by telling stories about others exerting their own power. This class is for students who already have foundational storytelling classes and skills in their toolbox, and who would like to work together to help build empowering narratives across various multimedia platforms.
