UW Comm students, alumni to have strong presence at Globie Awards

Globie Awards 2014

This Saturday marks the Seattle Globalist’s annual fundraiser “The Globie Awards.” In addition to honoring the community-nominated Globalist of the Year, awards are given to five of their contributors in a variety of categories – and this year, all but one of them are UW Communication alumni or students.

“This was not intentional – the Globalist’s ties to the Department are just so strong and our students are so high quality that it happened that way,” said Alex Stonehill, co-founder of the Seattle Globalist and Artist in Residence at the UW Department of Communication.

Recent journalism alumna Lael Henterly won the Contributor Award for Investigative Reporting, delving deep into issues like government transparency and private prison corporations. Current journalism student Atoosa Moinzadeh will take home the prize for Social Justice Reporting as she focused on transgender equality and immigrant shop owners, among other topics.

The Contributor Award for International Reporting goes to MCDM graduate Dacia Sáenz, who produced a short film about transgender Americans who look to Thailand for better healthcare options and also documented human rights abuses in El Salvador. Ethiopia is the focus of Youth Reporter winner Aida Solomon, who is a communication major. She aims to subvert misconceptions of her home country and its people.
